“Grits Queen” of Palm Beach Redefines BRUNCH! #BlackGirlMagic | The Hungry Black Man

If cameraman Korey (@KoreyDavisPhotography) doesn’t shoot it, I won’t eat it.”

With August upon us, we’re celebrating The Hungry Black Man’s one-year anniversary while also celebrating National Black Business Month by traveling around the United States highlighting delicious Black Owned eateries!

Our first stop was the fabulous Trindy Gourmet at 407 North Rosemary Ave, West Palm Beach, FL. Palm Beach County’s Grits Queen, Ms. Trinnette Morris is the chef and creative genius behind this amazing weekday brunch spot. She’s also a major figure in the Black culinary scene; assisting food entrepreneurs in scaling their enterprises and even providing space in her store for local brands to sell.

The eatery is reminiscent of a Parisian café with its bright colors, cozy feel and amazing tunes playing all morning. Culinary offerings include the usual brunch suspects, but with a healthy twist. I started with the City Side Salad ($5.25) that reminded me of a Paleo Diet masterpiece. I could just see my former CrossFit coach foaming at the mouth at this picture of “Hunter and Gatherer” hard work in sweet apples, earthy avocado, spinach leaves and crumbles of bacon. I recommend their house dressing, as it incorporated magnificently with the salad and its components.

Feeling elegant and sophisticated, we ordered the Trindy Omelet ($8), topped with garlic kale, roasted tomato, smoked bacon and cheddar cheese with a side of home fries. What a great decision. The omelet was flavorful, fluffy and a great middle ground between a delicate French roll-up and a hearty Southern American or English half-moon. Each bite was increasingly more delicious with the cheese melting through and through. A definite MUST HAVE!

Another satisfying and delicious entree is the French Toast ($7) – great with any meat side – but I recommend BACON! The French Toast comes topped an unforgettable organic maple warmed sugar that I drizzled warm syrup over for additional decadence! Delectableness through simplicity has become the most appropriate characterization of these plate licking entrees, with emphasis on the French Toast.

Now, for the grand finale, Trindy Gourmet’s world-famous GRIT BOWLS! Grits are a staple in Southern American cuisines, especially in low country cooking, even being named the state food for the state of South Carolina. I started out with the local favorite, Shrimp and Grits Bowl ($13), with a roux unlike the typical Shrimp and Grits because it boasts a surprising and welcomed Lobster Bisque flavor. A MUST HAVE for sure.

Next, my favorite, the Loaded Grit Bowl ($7.00) served with pork sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, and topped with crispy bacon. You can go even more extreme by adding more toppings like ham, green pepper, onions and other toppings for a true foodie experience.

Trindy grits are creamy, salty and buttery grits that make you go “Damn, these some good ass grits,” and “Who made these grits?” I must admit that even though I make great grits like my grandmother taught me – I found myself questioning life once I had Trindy’s. Each speckle was cooked to a perfect consistency. Neither soupy nor hard and grainy, they were perfect each visit.

To complete my experience, I ordered Trindy’s homemade pecan bites ($3) to go. They didn’t make it out of the parking lot. These Southern treats transport you back to Georgia with a powerful taste from such little bites. I detected hints of brown sugar, butter, and just a touch of vanilla; which I couldn’t confirm because Trindy’s tight-lipped staff would not budge when I ran back in the restaurant to ask what was in these babies.

Downtown Palm Beach has a couple of great eateries popping up, as well as some older ones being rediscovered by visitors – yours truly included. Trindy stands out as a premiere brunch destination in sophisticated simplicity. Each entrée has as many organic and natural ingredients as expected for a health-conscious crowd, but packing the taste us true southerners can enjoy and get down with. I will definitely return to this Hungry Black Man Approved spot. You can reach the restaurant at (561) 570-6325
